How STD and LTD Work Together
Financial protection when you can’t work
Siemens Healthineers provides you with Short and Long-Term Disability benefits through Lincoln Financial that protect you financially if you are sick or injured for an extended period of time. A disability means that you are unable to perform one or more defined job responsibilities.
Short-Term Disability (STD)
Siemens Healthineers gives you short-term disability coverage for up to 26 weeks to help replace income during the first 6 months of a disability. STD benefits cover non-occupational claims only. If you become disabled, the company will pay 100% of your salary for weeks 2 – 9 of your disability and 66.67% of your salary for weeks 10 – 26.
Long-Term Disability (LTD)
Long-Term Disability (LTD) Insurance helps replace part of your income if you can’t work for a long time due to a physical or mental disability.
Here’s how it works
- You get paid 60% of your monthly pay after being disabled for 180 days.
- To qualify, you must be totally and permanently disabled and under a doctor’s care.
- For the first 24 months, you’re considered disabled if you can’t do your job.
- After 24 months, you’re considered disabled if you can’t do any job you’re qualified for, based on your skills and experience.
- Your LTD benefit may be reduced if you get other disability payments (like Social Security or Workers’ Comp).
- If you choose the company-paid plan, your benefit is taxable.
- You can choose to buy your own LTD coverage with after-tax dollars, which gives you a non-taxable benefit equal to 60% of your salary.
- If your pay goes up during the year, your coverage will increase too (up to $15,000/month), but your cost won’t change until the next annual enrollment period.
- If your pay goes down, your coverage won’t change until the next calendar year.
