Long-Term Disability

Financial protection when you can’t work

Siemens Healthineers provides you with Short and Long-Term Disability benefits through Lincoln Financial that protect you financially if you are sick or injured for an extended period of time. A disability means that you are unable to perform one or more defined job responsibilities.

Long-Term Disability (LTD)

Long-Term Disability (LTD) Insurance helps replace part of your income if you can’t work for a long time due to a physical or mental disability.

Here’s how it works

  • You get paid 60% of your monthly pay after being disabled for 180 days.
  • To qualify, you must be totally and permanently disabled and under a doctor’s care.
  • For the first 24 months, you’re considered disabled if you can’t do your job.
  • After 24 months, you’re considered disabled if you can’t do any job you’re qualified for, based on your skills and experience.
  • Your LTD benefit may be reduced if you get other disability payments (like Social Security or Workers’ Comp).
  • If you choose the company-paid plan, your benefit is taxable.
  • You can choose to buy your own LTD coverage with after-tax dollars, which gives you a non-taxable benefit equal to 60% of your salary.
  • If your pay goes up during the year, your coverage will increase too (up to $15,000/month), but your cost won’t change until the next annual enrollment period.
  • If your pay goes down, your coverage won’t change until the next calendar year.

Definition of Totally and Permanently Disabled

To be eligible for LTD, you must be considered totally and permanently disabled and under the care of a licensed physician. For the first 24 months of coverage, you are considered totally and permanently disabled if you cannot perform all the essential duties of your occupation. After LTD benefits have been paid for 24 months, you are considered Disabled if you are unable to perform with reasonable continuity the Material and Substantial Duties of Any Occupation for which you are reasonably qualified, taking into account your training, education, experience and pre-disability earnings.

If you have a pay increase during the year

Under most circumstances, your LTD coverage will automatically increase if your pay increases during the year, subject to a maximum monthly benefit of $15,000 (for either employee-paid or company-paid LTD coverage). The increase in coverage will begin on your first day at work after your pay increase, but your contributions will remain unchanged until the next Annual Enrollment. If your pay decreases during the year, your LTD coverage will not change until the following calendar year.
